Voyager Seasreview in Consumer Info Resource Directory

This was first posted on rec.travel.cruises news group. Note: Some things have changed since I wrote this. Johnny Rockets is free again and the Lines are back and most of the Sports Deck offerings are free. But you should check with your Travel Agent for the latest information. Thats why you have a Travel Agent Its their job to answer your questions. This was a multigenerational cruise as is our custom. Grandmom 76, more cruises than she can count, Dad me 53, some 20+ cruises, my kids Trey 27 and Holly 22 both with 11 cruises and friend Sara 22 a first time cruiser.Normally we arrive the day before the cruise, but because of all the Y2K celebrations we left on an early morning flight out of DFW for Miami. I hate that. RCI didnt meet us at the plane, but instead gave us instructions to go to baggage claim area 13 where we were greeted by employees who acted as if they would rather be almost anyplace else but at the airport doing their job. After standing around the baggage claim area for about half an hour we boarded our buses for the 20 minute ride to the Port of Miami.Royal Caribbean built a brand new terminal for the Voyager of the Seas. Its a shame they didnt give as much thought to the terminal as they did to the ship. The crowd to check in was huge we sailed with over 3600 people aboard, and it took forever. The AC in the terminal was on the fritz which didnt help any. We joined the waiting hordes. The first time I checked my watch it was 12:51. We finally boarded the ship at 1:45. This is really not the way you want to start a vacation.I expected the newest, largest cruise ship in the world to be magnificent. Well, she is. Voyager of the Seas is a beautiful ship, well designed and full of large and small spaces so that you can find a place for you no matter what your tastes. The Royal Promenade is the heart of the ship and lives up to the hype. The art work ranges from elegant to whimsical especially on deck and the interior architecture and décor is constantly interesting. Simply put, the ship is intelligently designed top to bottom, and the design is pulled off with a great deal of flair. She is also the most stable platform Ive ever sailed on. I highly recommend her for any first timers who are worried about seasickness.Cabins are of the Royal Caribbean style just slightly too small, just slightly too little storage, etc., but just enough space so that you wont complain to bitterly. Cabin décor is standard cruise ship. The bathroom did have an innovation I found welcome. The shower is circular and the shower DOORS, yes doors, open like a clam shell. It lets them find a few more square feet for the shower without intruding into the small bathroom. Neat. Soap, shampoo and conditioner are the standard amenities. Our Room Steward was excellent. He preformed his job expertly yet without intrusion. And he added a great deal of fun to our trip. He became very creative with pillow and towel sculpture as the trip wore on. The more my Mother praised him, the more creative he became. A photo of some of Merlins work is on the trip photo page of my web site. The inroom honor bar assumes that you have no honor. Sensors detect movement so if you pick it up to look at it, you bought it. A rather stern warning proclaims that ALL SALES ARE FINAL. In other words, no sob stories about how your kids took everything out to build a fort for the GI Joes and you really did put them all back. RCI aint buying it, you are.The TV wasnt used much in our room, but they had the normal ESPN, CNN type stuff plus the sales channels for tours and RCI that run all week. They also produce some on board TV during the week and every talk is rebroadcast. The inroom music channels are just as bad as on any other cruise line. Sailing in the Caribbean you would think at least one channel would give us Island music Jimmy Buffet, Bob Marley, even Harry Belafonte. But never have I been on a ship that was that sensible. The interactive TV, at least from my standpoint, was a bust. We simply didnt use it. I bought the one shore excursion we did buy wave runners on Labadee the old fashioned way at the tour office. I ordered next nights wine from the wine steward after dinner each night, like I always have. I have no report on room service because we didnt use it.
